Guest Speaker

Dave Tulloch, Author, “Ottawa’s Caribbean Community Since 1955: History and Profiles”

Details

Herbert “Pops” Brown and his wife Estelle became the first Black business owners in Ottawa when they founded Brown’s Cleaners in 1957, serving as an example for others of what could be achieved in Canada by African-Canadians.

People of Caribbean or African origin coming to the capital to build new lives were given the advice “Go and see the Browns” and found comfort and guidance from Herbert Brown  – more commonly known as “Pops” – and his wife, Estelle.

Admission is free. All are welcome to attend.
