POSTPONED: Before Bytown: Captain Burke & The Richmond Military Settlement

George A. Neville

Guest Speaker:

GEORGE NEVILLE, Past President of The Historical Society of Ottawa

Once upon a time, the future site of Ottawa was merely a handy jumping off point for travellers journeying to the important new settlement of Richmond. Settlers were being sought for Upper Canada and there existed increased suspicion about the actual loyalty of some the so-called “loyalists” who continued to flow northward from the U.S. As a result, disbanded soldiers from recent conflicts were now being encouraged to settle in the Ottawa Valley. Key among these new settlements was Richmond, being carved out of the woods along the Jock River under the leadership of War of 1812 veteran George Thew Burke.

Many of you were looking forward to our Speaker Series presentation "Before Bytown: Captain Burke & The Richmond Military Settlement" by HSO Past-President George A.Neville.

As you know, we have unfortunately had to put our Speaker Series on hold due to the current public health situation.

Good news! On the occasion Richmond's 200th Anniversary, George's thoroughly researched account of this landmark settlement was published in The Ottawa Genealogist and back copies are available.
