--- Yankies and Loyalists: Bytown to Kingston in 1830 New!

The diary of a journey from Bytown to Kingston in February of 1830 and the adventures of four young men on the way. An interesting glimpse into life in pioneer Upper Canada, focusing on the inns, the landscape and the influence of the builiding of the Rideau Canal. Edited with an introduction by Edwin Welch, member of the Historical Society of Ottawa. Preface by Flora M. Blais, president of the Historical Society of Ottawa.

Bytown Series #2. The title page has the title as "Yankies and Loyalists: A Trip from Bytown to Kingston in February 1830". According to pamphlet #107 [Ottawa River Settlements in 1833 as described by Dr. Alexander J. Christie], the editor, archivist Edwin Welch, attributed the diary to Dr. Christie from "the provenance of manuscript transfer" from Christie descendants via the Clark Estate to Mr. A.C. Hill, QC. See also pamphlet #72 [Rideau Canal & Bytown Memoranda by Dr. A.J. Christie, Physician to the Rideau Canal Works]. ISBN 0-920960-00-6. 1979.

Document history:

Historical Language Advisory : No mention of indigenous people despite the vast area travelled although this is certainly a blessing considering how the author viewed anyone not like himself. Shocking (and frankly troubling) language describing several encounters with women along the way - the women were clearly not seen as equals and many comments are viciously demeaning. It has some derogatory descriptions of people, including several references to young women and their beauty or lack thereof (e.g. Girls with such dirty faces they looked like a “Venetian Moor” P. 8.). It even describes a reported sexual harassment and/or assault by a man of a young server at an Inn (page 12). Male-centric attitude creates sexist titles for professions and activities (e.g. landlord, landlady, path master, seaman, sportsman, etc...). Some strong one-sided opinions and comments regarding women, Loyalists, Yankees and government. Some racial, national and sexist slurs. Offensive description of farmers, a solicitor, a lawyer, a doctor and a pulpit orator.
